Distilling the essence from different cultural sources, Champa culture creates for itself a distinctive and impressive character that is represented in its architecture, sculpture, handicratfs, dancing and festivals.
About festivals of Champa people, there are 5 common festivals:
• Rain praying festival
• Kate’ festival
• Ranuwan festival
• Roya Phik Trok festival
• Goddess Ponaga festival
Of these events, I would like to introduce you the Rain praying festival
Rain praying festival:
- It takes place in the begining of February (after Lunar new year holiday).
- To prepare for this festival, they put an altar at the front yard of the patriarch’s house or near by the river watering place. Artisans in the village decorate it with tassels, patterns stylized motif of Champa called Pơrưng. There is a tall bamboo tree put near by, forming the wings of a bird (according to the ethnic, bird is symbolic of the peace). On the altar put a boiled chicken, a jar of white wine, bee wax, and a bowl of rice. After that, they spread out a new mat infront of the altar. In the middle of the mat, there is a small plate with two coins.
- The number of offerings is odd, but the number of people who doing the honours and the patriarch is even. Of these people, a presentative will be choosen as a god’s servant to sit on a high platform. On the ground prays the patriarch. Then he tosses the coins. is a good sign showing that it’s going to rain soon. In that time, the person sitting on the high platform splashes the wine jar toward four directions. Then he appeals people to drum the gongs and dance in “A Tonh Ch’yong e pla” melody. People has done the honour will offer things to deities.
- At the end of the festival, whole people eat, dance. Next, they take a small scoop of seed and scatter it on the land with their own strong belief for new crops.
